Groundman: A groundman is responsible for assisting Lineworkers and Operators with material, and tools required for construction, following safety procedures, working with hand tools, and preparing trucks with material and tools for the days work.
Operator: An operator is responsible for effectively and safely operating, and performing daily maintenance on heavy equipment, which may include, but is not limited to cranes, bucket trucks, diggers, trenchers, skid steers, and wire pullers.
Apprentice Lineman / Lineman: A lineman’s and apprentice lineman’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Knowing and applying safety procedures -Apprentice will be trained to operate most equipment
-Knowledge of electricity and proper grounding -Climbing Poles, and utilizing aerial platforms (bucket trucks)
-Assembly and erection of steel towers -Framing, erection and guying of wood poles
-Installation of insulators and materials -Stringing, splicing, deadending, and clipping of conductors
-Installation of traveler blocks -Performing any work required of groundman or operator
**Note that you must complete a Department of Labor Apprenticeship program to be a Journeyman Lineman
Substation Technician: A substation technician’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Knowing and applying safety procedures -Steel Erection including rigging and equipment operation
-Installing high voltage bus work, both tube and wire bus
-600v power and control cable wiring -Wiring control panels, instruments, relays and battery systems
-Transformer oil filling, testing and repair of existing transformers
-General HV Electrical Equipment Installation -PVC and GRC conduit installation -
Ground grid installation
